Definitely an increase in number of posts/posters. The difficultly has always been maintaining that activity and continuing to attract new members. We'll see what happens come football season.

There have been a couple of major surges since I came here five years ago. Each time the traffic has died down. I am thrilled to have all the new posters here, and I think everyone is doing their best to make people feel welcome. Time will tell, but I am hopeful that WtW will retain a good portion of the new people. Welcome to all!!

One thing in the board's favor is that the new format of the Phog/247/Shiver pretty much is generic suckage.

I've given myself a few days to get used to it. I can't. It's fucking terrible. There isn't a single person who thinks the change has been positive, and that's coming from some pretty lousy message board software already.

I haven't posted on it since the first day, but I've checked in on it from time to time. It must suck pretty bad because a number of people are complaining about it. The odd thing is that there are posters on the Shiver who have been part of that for some time, so there is at least a segment of message board folks who like that generic, glaring white hot garbage.

I checked out The Shiver. There are a few die-hards, but it's deader than this place ever was. It's not long for this world, IMO.

Came home from work and for some reason fired up some Beethoven before logging in. Seeing all the board traffic with Beethoven playing was glorious.

I joined during the Phog Aidz epidemic of Two Aught Ten. Was an OG.

Interaction all went to chat and I had to work occasionally and I suddenly didn't get the jokes and felt like the fat kid in the corner eating paste (the fact I am a fat kid with a palate for certain industrial pastes is entirely coincidental).

Here for the triumphant revival. I will do my part and bring the paste (Elmers).

One of my dad's friends was a painter and drank this stuff. Of course, most painters I've known don't care what they drink. Or smoke.

Think I had it once. It was my grandfather's beer of choice. With all the smoking he did, taste probably didn't matter.

Agree, it has been on my daily browsing agenda for the past few YEARS. Just about every day, to the point I get kind of annoyed when it's not updated. Then I realize how silly that is and try to add my own contributions here or there.

If I'm being honest, the thing that's bothered me the most about the whole Phog transition is that it's pushed traffic up here more, and I worry that MissT's increased mod responsibilities now will push the 24hr thread down on the priority list. That can't happen. It just can't as I won't have anything to do from 9:20-9:30 in the 2nd floor bathroom.

You had a role in this too, Bro Brick. You are the one who goaded me into checking it out. I have about 300 posts on WtW... but like you I have view that thread hundreds of times.

i have long felt that EDF is the reason the Phog grew and survived. I think the same for Miss T C over here to an extent. Some people may go straight to the Outhouse, I guess. But for me it has always beeen MissTCs thread.

Thanks for that vote of confidence and the kind words.

I think, in many ways, it was the "24 hour thread" (as we all have grown to call it) that did, indeed, allow this site to survive. When that thread was started, it was not unusual for this site to only have one or two or sometimes three posts in a day. Then Gard, who actually started the thread (and I still think of it as HIS thread, not mine) posted the first post, and it sort of took off from there. I contributed a lot to that thread (probably 3/4ths or more of its posts), but frankly everyone else who was active at the time also took part. Fro has certainly contributed a lot to it as well.

A few months back, when the site renewal for this place came due, Joe Norris posited the question as to whether or not we wanted to keep the site going. At that time, the 24 hour thread was the only thread that was continually updated, aside from basketball threads during the season. We all agreed that this site allowed us to post things that we couldn't post anywhere else. Aside from the Outhouse (you can get porn anywhere, really), we've all posted things in the 24 hour thread that were racist, sexist, homophobic, blasphemous and so on. Most sites would not allow those kinds of posts, but since we were a close-knit group, we didn't give a shit what anyone else thought. We posted stuff that was funny, even if it slammed "us" (people we identify with). There are no rules for that thread.

In that short conversation, we decided that this site was still a worthwhile project and we kept it alive.

Now, I'm REALLY REALLY glad we did, and I hope we can thrive.

(Although I may have to tone down some of the worst of the politically incorrect stuff, now that we have more users. I don't want to piss anyone off to the point that they want to leave.)

EDIT to add: I probably should contact the Guinness Book of World Records. It's probably the longest thread in the history of the internet on a site that only had 4 or 5 active posters.

Yeah, I'm happy to pay to keep the place alive I just didn't want to do it if we didn't have people around

It's encouraging to see the activity on all the boards and hopefully you all stick around

As always, please feel free to pm the mods/admins with questions or suggestions and we will try to implement what we can

Edit: also, I don't know what happened, but my work changed their monitoring system and the board has been rendered pretty much unusable at work...So during business hours, my activity will likely be limited as I can only use phone...Feel free to pm one of the other mods or admins (z5, tcs, gooner, froboz, or wave) and they should be able to help you as well

Good observation on EDF. Having a "bad guy" seems needed, just like in politics.

Miss TC.... thank you so much for sharing the history and philosophical underpinnings. That may not be meaningful to all posters... but it is everything to me. I mean that sincerely.

Joe - Don't answer if you do not want.....I do not really have enough equity in the board to ask...but was your capital outlay to keep the board running a substantial one? Is that something that has to be done periodically?
